Vietnamese Flan
Ingredients:
Custard: 6 eggs 3 cups of milk (whole milk is the best) 1 1/2 cups of sugar Caramel: 1/2 cup sugar 1 tablespoon water Steps: 1. Make the caramel with the sugar in a pot. Heat the mixture on low heat until all of the water has vaporized and the sugar becomes golden brown caramel. It should still be a liquid. 2. Pour the liquid caramel into a glass bowl to form a thin layer on the bottom. Leave the caramel to harden in the glass bowl. 3. Mix the eggs, milk, and the sugar in a mixing bowl. Stir until the mixture is smooth and strain out the lumps. Pour the egg and milk mixture into the glass bowl with the hardened caramel on the bottom. 4. Put the bowl in a steam pot (that has water inside) and put it on simmer. Steam the flan cake for one hour. Make sure that the heat is on the lowest setting or else the flan will have bubbles, Plus, it will look and taste bad. 5. After about one hour, take the flan cake out. Let it cool down and then refrigerate it. 6. Serve chilled, with crushed ice, or with coffee. |
Flan is a dessert custard with a caramel "crust" on the top. You are supposed to eat this dessert cold. It's made of eggs, sugar, and cream. It's delicious, decadent, and smooth. This recipe is originally a French recipe. However, because of the French invasion of Vietnam, many French foods are incorporated into Vietnamese cuisine. Our family makes this recipe because my mom has been making it ever since she was a kid and also because it tastes really good, especially with coffee!
